Why Most Budgeting Apps Are Failing Canadians — And What I Built Instead
A founder's honest take on the state of personal finance software north of the border.
I've tried them all. Mint. YNAB. Wealthsimple's budgeting tools. Every time, the same story: the app works great for Americans, struggles with Canadian banks, ignores the way Canadians actually spend money, and treats you like a passive observer of your own financial life rather than someone capable of making smart decisions.
So I built something different.
The Problem Nobody Talks About
Personal finance in Canada has a quiet crisis. Canadian households are carrying serious debt, costs keep rising, and the tools designed to help us manage money were mostly built for the American market, with American banks, American tax structures, and American financial assumptions baked in.
The apps that do work in Canada are either too simple, offering basic expense tracking with no real insight, or too complex, with spreadsheet-level tools that require a finance degree to operate. There's almost nothing in the middle: something intelligent, beautiful, and built specifically for how Canadians bank, spend, and save.
That gap is where Pilot Wealth was born.
What I Actually Built
Pilot Wealth is an AI-powered personal finance web app built for Canadians. It connects directly to your bank accounts through Plaid, pulls in your real transactions, and then does something most apps don't: it thinks alongside you.
Here's what that looks like in practice:
Why AI Changes Everything
The best financial advisor I ever had wasn't a human. It was a conversation.
The problem with human financial advisors is access. Most Canadians can't afford one, and the ones who can often don't get proactive advice. You schedule a meeting, you show up, and too often you hear what you already knew.
AI changes that equation entirely. When your financial data lives in one place and an AI can reason over it in real time, you stop getting generic advice and start getting your advice.
That's the version of financial guidance that used to be available only to people with time, money, and access. We're making it accessible to everyday Canadians.
The Bigger Vision
Pilot Wealth isn't trying to be another budgeting app. The vision is a financial co-pilot: something that sits alongside your financial life and helps you navigate it intelligently.
We're launching on Android shortly. A full mobile experience that brings everything from the web app into your pocket, with the same real-time bank sync, AI coaching, and Pilot Score you get on desktop.
The goal is simple: every Canadian deserves a financial tool as smart as the ones available to the wealthy. We're building that tool.
